
P&LE Alco RS-3’s at Montour Junction
Two of Pittsburgh & Lake Erie’s fleet of five
Alco-constructed RS-3 type of road-switcher diesel locomotives head a
westbound train through the railroad’s Montour Junction station located at
Mile Post 10.

P&LE RS-3 in storage at McKees Rocks
Acquired in October, 1953 from the American
Locomotive Company, P&LE’s RS-3 model road-switcher diesels were all
placed into storage at McKees Rocks, Pa. in late 1966. All remained in
storage until the were disposed of by selling to General Electric Company
as part of a package relating to the purchase of new U-28B class
locomotives for the P&LE.

P&LE shop goat locomotive X-100016 in action.
Rare picture of P&LE McKees Rocks shop’s goat
locomotive X-100016 in steam, on a turntable with a company Mikado, at one
of the two roundhouses there. Rebuilt from a B-104 class switcher, by
adding a saddle water tank over the boiler, and a small coal bunker in the
locomotive cab, the locomotive lasted until the end of P&LE’s steam
operations in 1953.

Montour Railroad locomotive No. 2
Former P&LE RR American-type steam locomotive
No. 9261 was sold to the Montour Railroad, becoming their No. 2. Despite
frequent derailments due to its large 72 inch drivers and Montour’s poor
track work, the locomotive handled all of the railroads passenger trains
until the end of such service in 1927.

PC&Y Chartiers Avenue bridge
The program to improve Pittsburgh Chartiers &
Youghiogheny Railway’s operations required a lot of ingenuity to keep the
railroad and local traffic running despite extensive reconstruction of the
line. This picture shows a part of the work necessary to eliminate an
at-grade crossing on Chartiers Avenue. More details of the structure will
be found in Kahndog’s upcoming book, ENGINE FOR
CHANGE.

H-9 class Mikado freight locomotive #9593
PMcK&Y-owned H-9 class Mikado freight
locomotive #9593 passes United Sates Steel Corporation's huge National
Tube plant, (at the time the largest pipe-making facility in the world),
as it heads eastbound on P&LE's main line at McKeesport, Pa. in July,
1950. More may be found about the locomotive in Kahndog Publications P&LE's

Monongahela Railway doodlebug M-40
Ex-P&LE railroad doodle bug, now Monongahela
Railway’s M-40 is seen at Brownsville, Pa. Union Station getting ready for
a trip heading southward into West Virginia. More information about the P&LE’s

Detroit Edison train at J&L South Side Pittsburgh
tunnel.
A Detroit Edison-owned empty unit train heads
eastbound though Pittsburgh’s South Side section at Control Point CP1Y as
it approaches the P&LE’s only tunnel, which passes under a J&L steel
plant. The maker CP1Y means that it is the train control point located 1
mile into the P&LE’ s Youghiogheny Division, east of the railroad’s
Pittsburgh Terminal dispatching office.
