REVIEW:
S. Gaugian - “For anyone interested in Mikados, this book is a must – The
rarity of many of these documents and never-before-published photographs
is sure to those who want the inside story on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie’s
2-8-2s”
New York Central Historical Society's Central
Headlight- "a very fine book, and our members are encouraged to add a copy
to their library"
Model Railroad News- "Be prepared to see more
backhead shots, single Mikes heading long train shots, drawings, engine
service forms, maps, and sidebar stories on train wrecks and other human
angle stories. This is not a book you read once, throw up on the shelf and
forget about. Even if you're fooling with some other steam topic, you may
find yourself back in this book for background information. Modelers will
definitely find a lot to copy in these pages."
"The Mikados of this Little Giant make for
a nice tightly-focused topic, and yet leaves plenty of room for the
surrounding history and circumstances." "It is also a book full of photos,
drawings, and other wonderful information which might help you make models
or simply pass a pleasant evening (or several) reading, looking, learning
and enjoying"
P&LE's MIKADOS by Jack Polaritz
P&LE’s Mikados is offered only in a hard
cover version containing a total of 142 pages, published in the fall
of 2002. It presents details relating to the history of all three
H-type class locomotives used by P&LE. The book contains 164
photographs, including several in color, 47 significant documents
relating to these locomotives from the railroad’s archives, and
numerous maps, drawings and charts. A complete roster with the
ultimate disposition of each locomotive is included in the book, as
are many previously unknown historical details relating to steam
operations. This book is Volume 1 of a two-unit series that tells the
story of P&LE’s Mikado and Berkshire locomotives.
This is the definitive book about these historically significant
locomotives that were last domestically produced steam from the American
Locomotive Company. They were the product of corporate politics that never
should have built at a time when the diesel had become the railroad
industry's choice for motive power. In fact, the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie
did not want these locomotives, and could not even operate them over a
significant portion of their railroad when received. The story is
supported with many previously never before published historical documents
P&LE’s BERKSHIRES is a hard cover edition with dust jacket - 8 3/4" x 11
1/2", with over 130 pages containing 134 photographs, plus 52 documents,
13 maps and 6 drawings, fully indexed. It tells the story of how these
locomotives came to be, their development and operations, both on the P&LE
and New York Central Railroad. Anyone fascinated by these locomotives will
love this book.
THE MONONGAHELA RAILWAY
Its history and operation
1903-1993 by by David Gratz & Terry Arbrogast
Price: $39.95 (US)
AVAILABILITY: THE MONONGAHELA RAILWAY is
available from both Kahndog Publications and its
dealer network.
The principal author of this book was the
former General Superintendent of the Monongahela Railway who had complete
access to the railroad’s archives and photographic collection in creating
this work. This publication is the definitive book about this interesting
railroad that was one of the premiere coal-hauling railroads in America.
It was a vital source of northern West Virginia and southwestern
Pennsylvania coal and coke for its three owning railroads, the Pittsburgh
& Lake Erie, Pennsylvania and the Baltimore & Ohio. A measure of
their success came from the Monongahela Railway’s efficient movement of
coal in volume to its parents.
The book is rich in historical details, thanks
to its author’s lifetime of intimate association with the people who made
the line an exemplary model for the industry. Its 209 pages nestled
between a laminated color cover, are filled with hundreds of black and
white photographs, maps and rosters.
Due to the Monongahela Railway's importance to
the railroads who owned it, anyone who is a fan of those lines will want a
copy of this book. If you are interested in Western Pennsylvania, or
coal-hauling railroading, this book is a must for your collection.

REVIEWS:
Excerpt taken from a review done January, 2005 MODEL RAILROAD NEWS:
Pittsburgh & Youngstown are still trying to figure out life without
the steel mills and the railroads, both of which pumped so much into
their communities. Fortunately for us, people like the authors
of this book have taken the time and trouble to chronicle the
specifics of history, before they are lost from memory. P&LE’s Gondola
Cars is more than just a resource for railfans and model makers; it’s
a time capsule to read and enjoy.
P&LE’s Gondola Cars is offered only in a soft cover version containing
a total of 80 pages, published in the spring of 2004. Authored by
three original members of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad
Historical Society, it is replete with 170 color and black and white
photographs. In addition the book contains a number of original
documents and drawings relating to this equipment, along with rosters
for the various car series. The book also contains information about
modifications to the equipment, operating histories and the important
role that gondolas played within the steel manufacturing.
P&LE’s Gondola Cars is the first installment of a planned series about
P&LE freight car equipment, including cabooses. These books will be
produced utilizing both black and white and color pictures, though
production runs may be split between hard and soft cover versions.
