
P&LE Gondola No. 46104
Even as it dramatically reduced the size of its freight car fleet because
of mill closings in the 1980s, the P&LE became more desperate for revenue.
It had an almost new gondola built for pipe loading hauling scrap from the
pipe mills being torn down.

One of P&LE’s original GP-38-2’s, No. 2053 heads an unusual power
combination on a coal train going through Youngstown. The railroad often
utilized its switcher locomotives in road service, not just when
transferring power.

Four P&LE cabooses at McKees Rocks
Four of the five types of cabooses utilized by the P&LE in the late 1980s
are seen in this photograph taken at McKees Rocks. The fifth caboose in
the background was Montour Railroad No. 31, which was the last caboose
ever to operate over that line.

P&LE caboose No.531 at West Economy
Caboose No. 531 is on the rear of an eastbound freight train passing a
facility for loading pipe to barges at the LTV plant in Aliquippa, Pa. The
facility was the original location for a river car ferry service operated
by J&LE Steel Corporation. For more detail about the ferry service see

Detroit Edison train at West Economy
A pair of General Electric-built diesel “slave” units are helping to move
a Detroit Edison unit train eastbound on P&LE’s main line at West Economy,
Pa. The train is made up of empty aluminum gondolas heading back to the
Monongahela Railway at Brownsville, for movement back to mines for
loading.

Detroit Edison GE-built unit 018 heads a unit train through Elizabeth, Pa.
Located on P&LE’s Monongahela Division, it was the site of unusual
in-the-street operations.

Montour Railroad locomotive No. 35
Montour Railroad’s No. 35 is pictured in the railroad’s yard located at
Montour Junction, Pa. The Montour interchanged traffic with the Pittsburgh
& Lake Erie Railroad at this location, which was also the site of it shops
and dispatching office.

 B&O
EM-1 at New Castle
A pair of huge Baltimore & Ohio EM-1’s, headed by No.660, starts a train
out of New castle, Pa. heading west. These powerful locomotives were not
run in regular freight service over the P&LE, which was usually handled by
B&O’s S-1 2-10-2’s.
