
Workmen have begun disassembling the former Wabash Railroad bridge in the
background of this picture. The materials recovered from the bridge were
loaded out for scrapping from P&LE's Point Yard. The railroad's DX tower
controlling access to the Point Yard and the P&LE's Pittsburgh Terminal is
seen in the background.

Jones & Laughlin Steel's Hazelwood blast furnaces serve as the background
for this view of the Monongahela Connecting Railroad's former Elba Tower.
The tower once controlled access from the main line to the yard used for
positioning materials for delivery to the furnaces during the iron-making
process, seen filled with cars filled with scrap in the left side of the
picture. It also controlled access to the car repair facilities and
roundhouse in the foreground.

Located on P&LE's Koppel Branch, Koppel Industrial Car & Equipment Co.
built and repaired freight cars for main line, industrial and construction
railroad operations. The story of its Beaver Valley operations will be

A heavy-duty flat car built at the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie's McKees Rocks,
Pa. shops is posed for an "official" builders photo by the company
photographer. The structure in the right background ultimately became the
railroad's Diesel Shop, recently torn down in March, 2008.
