No one was injured in this wreck on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Main
Line at Colona, just east of Monaca, Pa. The 8475 was repaired and put
back into service, and the engineer was briefly suspended for his
inattention.

The former Pennsylvania Railroad 34th Street Yard in Pittsburgh's South
Side now belonged to the LTV Steel Corporation's Monongahela Connecting
Railroad when this picture was taken in 1986.

This view of the Jones & Laughlin South Side Works includes a view of
their blast furnaces in Hazelwood and the twin bridges that linked the
plants. Included within this picture is P&LE's single track main emerging
from the line's only tunnel, which was constructed to allow the steel
company to build at this location.

The curtains could be draw aside when the cold and precipitation wasn't
bad, or to allow access to the cab.
Storm curtains are a modeling detail not generally found on model layouts,
but were a fact of life during the steam-era on the railroads.

All buttoned-up for winter operation, the P&LE added storm curtains to
its steam locomotives in late fall to protect the crews from rain, snow
and cold of Pittsburgh's nasty weather.
