We hope you enjoy this assortment of mostly B&W images of the past.

Pittsburgh & Lake Erie RR 4-4-0 No. 23

Pittsburgh & Lake Erie RR 4-4-0 No. 23 was the railroad’s locomotive for hauling the company’s business cars and for use as an inspection locomotive by officials. It was used to make the first “official” trip over the P&LE’s new Ohio River Bridge in 1910, the image taken during this event will be included in Kahndog’s upcoming publication ENGINE FOR CHANGE.

Caboose # 413 rebuild from a wooden box car

An obvious rebuild from a wooden box car, this conversion by the P&LE’s McKees Rocks shops for service as an interchange/local service caboose was unusual in that it had platforms added to the car ends.

RR info card for caboose #413

Originally constructed as steel underframe box car No. 31658, it is surprising to see that its conversion to a caboose was not made until after World War II, in September, 1946. While many railroads made such conversions during the war because of materials shortages, P&LE waited until a year after the War to rebuild box cars into cabooses.
