George Alberti Letter on
Project - May 30, 2006
We have planned events for this summer, with all proceeds going
to the station restoration project.
We have started some work for the summer. The station's grounds are
being cut now on a regular basis, and the site looks great! The cellar
steps were repaired, mainly because we are storing so much down there.
We are planning on opening up all doors this year, for ease of
reconstruction operations.
The organization has almost 3,000 board feet of lumber, when it comes
in it will be immediately used to continue work on the building's
overhang. However, we will need to utilize some of it to replace any
bad wood where needed.
The building came through the winter and our wet spring this year in
good shape. We do have one stubborn small leak still in the agents
office, but the rest of the station has remained dry. In fact, it is
dry to the extent that old plaster and such is drying out so much that
some of it is coming down own its own, saving us some removal effort.
Our goal for this year is to try to get electric service reestablished
into the building. Hopefully, we can get some electricians as
volunteers to help us with wiring.
There is so much that needs to be done, and only so much that we can
do. We have recently added eight new members, who are mainly
interested in helping out with the reconstruction. We're hoping to get
more local professional businesses, such as plumbers, electricians,
heating specialists involved with the project, as well.
Hopefully, some of the people reading this at your site will become
either involved with our efforts, or attend our fundraising events.
Thanks, George Alberti

UPDATE 3/29/05 - E-Mail received from the
President of the Beaver Valley Chapter of the NRHS
Hello All. Just a short note to let
you all know that the BEAVER VALLEY JUNCTION CHAPTER HAS A NEW HOME.
We signed the papers late this afternoon and it's official. We are
now the owners of the P&LE Station and 4 1/2 acres of land in West
Pittsburg. Although there is a tremendous amount of work for us in
the future, the effort's now expended on this endeavor is basically all
for the chapter. It's ours and all that is put into the project will
be ours. There is no doubt in my mind that this station and grounds,
in the years to come, will be the crown jewel in the efforts of rail
preservation in Western Pa. We will have more details in the April
Highball and at the April meeting. Also just a note, that the April
meeting is one week later (April 16th) for this month only.
Take Care All. George Alberti

An important opportunity to preserve Pittsburgh & Lake Erie
Railroad history has presented itself thanks to the Beaver Valley
Junction chapter of the NRHS. This chapter was chartered in 1992
and currently has 65 members, mostly from the Beaver Valley area.
It is an industrious and enterprising group that has already
acquired and restored a number of pieces of railroad equipment,
and the former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad UN tower.
The group now has an
opportunity to acquire the former P&LE West Pittsburg, Pa.
passenger station situated on four acres of flat land. The
facility is a large brick structure with sufficient room to
present an important artifact owned by the chapter, the P&LE’s
original CTC control board, operating display and desk.
The building would also be
capable of housing and displaying other Western Pennsylvania
related artifacts, while affording the organization a meeting
place, a gift shop and snack area for visitors.
The acreage with the
structure enables the Beaver Valley Junction folks to display
their equipment and switch tower, plus allows them to acquire
addition items. This land also is sufficient for off-street
parking for museum visitors and people attending special events.
The West Pittsburg site
would be the only dedicated railroad museum serving six counties
that constitute Southwestern Pennsylvania. It will be an
important historical asset for over 100 school districts in the
region, allowing future generations an opportunity to know how
important railroads were to developing their communities.
Kahndog strongly supports
this effort and asks you to read further and lend your support.
